Varicella is a disease caused by infection with the Varicella Zoster Virus that causes a fever and an itchy rash. It is commonly known as Chickenpox.
The rash appears first on the trunk and face, but can spread over the entire body causing between 250 to 500 itchy blisters in unvaccinated persons. It is spread by coughing, sneezing, and direct contact with skin lesions.
Signs & Symptoms: appear 10-21 days after exposure and lasts for 5-10 days.
Prevention: It is easily prevented with the Varicella (Chickenpox) Vaccine. Two doses are recommended.
School age children in the State of Florida are required to be vaccinated for Varicella (Chickenpox) or show evidence of immunity:
