Noroviruses

Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause inflammation of the stomach and small and large intestines that results in vomiting or diarrhea. It is often referred to as the stomach flu but it is not caused by the influenza virus.
Noroviruses are found in the stool or vomit of infected people. They are very contagious and are spread easily from person to person.
People become infected by:
- Eating or drinking items that are contaminated
- Touching surfaces or objects that are contaminated and then placing hands in mouth
- Direct contact with an infected person
Signs & Symptoms: come on as early as 12 hours after exposure and can last for 1-2 days. Symptoms in children are generally more severe.
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach Cramping
- Low Grade Fever
- Chills
- Headache
- Musle Aches
- Fatigue
Prevention:
- Wash hands frequently, especially after using the toilet, changing diapers, and before eating or preparing food.
- Wash fruits, vegetables, and steam oysters before eating.
- Thoroughly clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces with bleach.
- Immediately remove and wash any contaminated clothing or linens with hot water and soap.
- Flush or discard any vomit or stool in the toilet and keep the surrounding area clean.
- Do not prepare food while infected and at leat 3 days after displaying symptoms.
- Dispose of any food that may have been contaminated.
